Top 7 Smartest Cat Breeds

Hello everyone. Welcome to today’s blog post. Over the last week, we had a question. What is the smartest cat? Well, that depends really on what you are looking for. There are a lot of smart breeds of cats, but which ones can learn like a dog? Well out of the tons of breeds out there we would say 15 would meet that requirement. Does that mean your cat can’t be trained if it is not one of these breeds?

Of course not – there are always exceptions. We recommend always to keep trying. Today’s list is 7 of the smartest cats, which technically break down to the easiest cats to train. So, let’s get to it. Here is Kittystead’s list of Top 7 Smartest Cat Breeds.

1. Siberian

There is no doubt that the Siberian cat makes the list. Our Aria is a Siberian cat, and she is incredibly intelligent. The Siberian is a glamorous native feline from the Taiga of Siberia, a forested area with a subarctic climate that no doubt contributed to this cat’s long, thick, protective coat.

The Siberian cat is highly affectionate with family and playful when they want to be. However, their exercise needs are not overly demanding, and they are just as happy to snuggle up with their humans as they are to chase a laser toy.

The Siberian cat is highly affectionate and loves to please. So, they will be eager to learn to please their human companion. But go without training this breed will run amuck and do as it pleases.

2. Scottish Fold

Next up we have the Scottish Fold breed. If you remember, this breed made our previous list of Worst Breed For New Owners due to it being a very needy cat and a few other traits. Regardless of these needy traits, the Scottish Fold breed is extremely smart.

Maybe that’s because Scottish Folds want to blend with the people as they love to be around people and do something with them. The Scottish Fold will watch the movies or television and pay attention to what is displayed on the screen.

Scottish Fold cats love to learn tricks and they expect you to play with them for a long time. Because they must be with human companions, it is not best to leave them alone for too long. Scottish Folds prefer toys that make them agile or puzzles toys that test their intelligence.

3. Abyssinian

If the best way to learn is to play, Abyssinian cats are some of the best learners. They are one of the breeds that can learn to play fetch with minor objects, and they will love to do it. The Abyssinian cat as the breed is called affectionately, can jump, and climb excellently.

Abyssinian love being the center of attention and need constant stimulation. So, if you are a person who is at work or school all day, the Abyssinian cat may need a partner or a friend. The Abyssinian is considered one of the most intelligent cat breeds around the world. They can easily learn tricks that would put Lassie to shame (ok maybe a slight exaggeration compared to Lassie, but still pretty close).

4. Turkish Van Cat

The Turkish Van cat loves to climb, but they are not very graceful. They are vast and clumsy by cat standards and tend to knock things over, sometimes on purpose, to see what happens. Judging by the Biblical story of the worldwide flood, the Turkish Van cat is considered as being a ratter on Noah’s Ark. Having a lot of water would make the Turkish Van an excellent candidate for survival during the flood.

The Turkish Van Cat breed have love of water and loves to swim. But combined with their tendency to fall over, the toilet is an unsafe place for the Turkish Van. So, toilet training is out for the Turkish Van Cat.

This cat breed exists in nature near Lake Van in Turkey, where the Turkish Van gets its name. That means they are more than able to find out themselves, and they do not like to be held as this is this breeds biggest pet peeve.

On these cat side, intelligence is not the only thing that they have going for them. Cornish Rex also has excellent jumping skills, they are also smart enough to open the doors and raid the cabinets. If you want to hide something from the Cornish Rex cat, make sure you do it when they don’t see it as they can easily find a way to retrieve it.

This breed is much like the Sphinx cat in looks except for the Cornish Rex has its down fur, where the Sphinx does not. Cornish Rex cats are good at retrieving toys and playing fetch. They are very fast and can easily move around corners. These cats love people and always want to have affection or a lap to sit on. The Cornish Rex is another cat that is great for couples who cannot decide whether they want a dog or a cat.

6. Bengal Cat

The Bengal cat is a domesticated cat breed consisting of hybrids of domestic cats, an Asian leopard cat, and an Egyptian Mau, which gives them a golden shimmer. The name of the breed comes from a taxonomic name.

These leopard beauties are very popular. Bengali cats are great to learn tricks and they have great paws. This can cause problems because the Bengal cats have a penchant (tendency to do something) to turn off a light switch, playing with the electronics, which can cause damages to Ipads and Gaxlay tablets alike.

Bengal loves to climb just like their leopard ancestors. Bengal cats love water and will follow you into the bath or shower if they can. But their love of water and dexterous paws make them a nightmare for fish in aquariums or ponds in the backyard.

The Siamese cat is one of the first recognizable breeds of Asian cats. Derived from the Thai cat, one of the varieties of several cats native to China that were brought to Thailand. In the 19th century, the Siamese is one of the most popular breeds in Europe and North America.

Siamese cats are loud, and they are happier when you communicate with them The Siamese like to follow you and observe what you are doing with an inquisitive eye. Siamese cats get bored very quickly if their brains are not stimulated. So, in short, make sure they always are left with something to stay busy. If they’re bored or unhappy Siamese cats will let you know, and if you want to maintain their mental health, you have to give them the attention they crave.

The Siamese cat is a popular breed among celebrities. Such as John Lennon, James Dean, and Syd Barrett. Syd Barrett owned a Siamese cat named “Lucifer Sam” which led to inspiring Pink Floyd’s song “Lucifer Sam.”
